Peter Zumthor - Baths

For ideas and inspiration I looked upon the work of Peter Zumthor with his creation of the Baths in Switzerland.

Through the use of material, lighting and water he has created spaces that take the occupant away from reality and allow for a space of relaxation and escape. These themes are what I envisaged to create within my space as it fitted perfectly with the narrative I had written.

Not only does Zumthor create the emotions from the space, he lets the materials speak for themselves and allows them to define the atmosphere and vibe of each singular room.

Project 1: Parti and Poche

Project 2: Room and Narrative

The painting I have chosen is Edward Hopper's, New York Office.
The narrative then is, "she serves people by day but then she allows herself to be served and cared for in the night".

Interesting ideas that led me to choose this particular painting include the sole female figure within the solid structure of the opening that instantly draws our attention. There is darkness within the room she is in, however, there is a quality of light that can be seen that shines upon her or could be said to be iluminated by her presence. Through this variance of light and shade we begin to feel as if although she is within that moment in time, her head and thoughts are within another moment as she is captivated and taken away by the contents of the letter she is reading.

Through this I wanted to create a space that was designed for her to escape from her reality and venture into a space where she could be with her thoughts and explore serenity and a sense of wonder.

Using a combination of voids and additions, the space should create a sense of wonder of what is to come next. There are two rooms within her space and each is designed to give a varying quality of experience. Windows and openings have also been limited to enhance the quality and degree of darkness and shade so even within her concise areas of space there are even more concise areas where she can hide away and escape into.

The exterior is designed to be solid and bold, not only to relate back to the solid opening within the painting, but to also highlight the clear distinction between exterior and interior. By venturing through the solid walls you will get the feeling that you are going to a separate place where there is a large threshold separating you from where you came from.
