Explanation
The art gallery is situated at 228 King St, Newtown. Adjacent to the site is a hairdresser and a cafe. The site was chosen in accordance with many factors including local transport systems, points of interests near by as well as the amount of traffic and the flow of people past that part of the street.
The expectation of the gallery was to take viewers away from the hassling and chaotic lifestyle that came with the city and the hectic life of King St. This was established through the clean white washed walls and the high ceilings which was a big contrast to the ornamental facades of the buildings surrounding the site. Photography and sculptures included in the gallery were also chosen to emphasis this notion.
Peter Jarver was chosen as the provider of the photography through his great scenic shots and beautiful eye for nature. He had a great ability to capture the most finest moments in time and showcase that in his photography. His work allowed viewers to escape into that moment in time and just think and enjoy the beauty of the world around us.
William Leslie was the chosen sculpture as his art was both sculptural art as well as practical. His fixtures were lighting fixtures that in the day time would present themselves as sculptural beauty while at night it also transforms into function through it's ability to provide light into the gallery space. This enabled the gallery to be lit without the necessity of the stereotypical "artificial" lighting.
The main theme of the gallery space is escape and a notion of taking those in the space to another realm. However through the installation of the glass courtyard on the left side of the gallery, it opened up parts of the gallery to the outside world so those on the street could also have a look at what was inside and what was available to them. While inside the space you can also view other aspects and levels of the gallery. This is seen where viewers on the main level can view artists working beneath them in the workshop and this also gives those working in the workshop the ability to view people in the gallery and the crowd that come in.

Project 2: Room & Narrative
Procedure
1. Woman with a water jug – Johannes Vermeer
- Brightness level high due to the open window
- Sense of purity due to water jug
- Spiritual feel with combination of light and water
- Free, flowing, calm, fresh
- Sense of openness and no restraint as she is opening the window
- Opening of window brings connotations of new beginning or fresh start
- Her facial expression though seems a bit sombre which maybe could suggest hidden emotions, suppression
- Need to be free or see the world
- Curiosity

Design/Thinking Process -
Through examination of the painting I have decided to pull out various elements i perceive through the painting. The lighting that is apparent through the window opening gives the painting a sense of happiness and a good mood. The water jug also connotates to me a sense of purity and nature. However when I look at the actual character's facial expression, I do not sense any mood of happiness but instead I see a longing for something.
As windows usually represent or have connections to new beginnings and the ability to look beyond the space you are within I thought i should use these concepts within the design of my space.
My space will consist of two levels where the bottom level will look quite normal and ordinary but as you move up to the second level there is more activity and something different. The top level will have various openings and artistic elements in order to inspire and excite the occupants of the space.
